Today, March 31st, is Transgender Day of Visibility (TDoV). Founded in 2009 by trans activist Rachel Crandall, this day offers an opportunity to celebrate the lives and contributions of transgender people. It is also a time to recognize the ongoing discrimination, violence, and systemic barriers that transgender people continue to face, especially as their rights come under increasing attack globally.
At YWCA Toronto, our Gender Diversity Inclusion Committee (GDIC) has gathered a collection of resources for Two-Spirit, transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse individuals, as well as for allies who want to learn, support, and show up with intention. Below, you will find a reflection from our committee co-chairs, information on events, support services and educational tools.
A Personal Reflection from the GDIC Co Chairs
As TDoV approached this month, we tried to reflect on visibility beyond the complicated thoughts we have about this day every year. Last year, we noted that Trans Day of Visibility is difficult for many of us because we are often asked to be “loud and proud” without any consideration of what that really means in practice. Many communities are familiar with having to ask themselves, “is it safe enough to be my full self, honestly, and visibly?” We are in an era of increased visibility for trans people – but it would be a mistake to believe visibility alone is a maker of progress. There is so much incredible work being done by on-the-ground trans and Two-Spirit led groups, and the work of protecting each other is ongoing – and that is progress to us. That is the work that brick by brick, will make visibility a meaningful and honest goal post. We are ever grateful for our beautiful and thoughtful trans and Two-Spirit friends and family, and for our peers at YWCA Toronto who help carve out pockets where visibility can be celebrated.
Transgender Day of Visibility Events and Programming Across the GTA
There are several TDoV events and programs happening this week, including:
At YWCA Toronto, we remain committed to celebrating trans lives and challenging transphobia in all its forms. Our work is grounded in the belief that every trans person deserves safety, respect, and the freedom to live authentically. We will continue pushing toward a future where all trans people are safe, respected and supported.
To all trans and gender diverse community members: we see you, we honour you, and we love you.

At YWCA Toronto we are proud to support the Women for Trans Rights Campaign. Join Queer Momentum and dozens of feminist organizations across Canada in rejecting any attempt to frame trans inclusion as a threat to women. Women’s rights and trans rights are not in conflict — supporting trans women is essential to advancing gender equality and ensuring all women are protected from discrimination.
Women and trans people share a common struggle: resisting patriarchy and the systems that have upheld inequality for generations.
