Why The Urgent Home Campaign Gives Me Hope

How could I possibly capture all of my gratitude in writing?

That’s the question I asked myself when I was asked to write this blog post as part of YWCA Toronto’s Urgent Home Campaign.

The truth is, I will never be able to tell you how thankful I am.

I am thankful for YWCA Toronto, to the supporters and donors that make their work possible, and I am thankful for the stability and possibility that were unlocked when YWCA Toronto helped my young son and me find a safe apartment where we can live.

The Urgent Home Campaign is the most important campaign I can think of. We all know that 2022 has been a difficult year, and as we head into the coldest season I can’t help but think about how much more difficult it will be for women, children, and gender diverse people who don't have a safe, supportive place to live. Please consider making a donation right now.

I remember the night I had to run. I grabbed my baby and I called the police and I fled from the violence. As a new refugee to Canada, I had no support system and nowhere to go. The moment I found YWCA Toronto was the first time my son had ever been truly safe. There are no words.
Yes, I want to give to the Urgent Home Campaign

The transitional housing program helped me get on my feet. We were offered emergency transportation and basic necessities and professional counselors to talk to. We were offered support. We were offered safety. We were offered space to figure out our next steps. We were offered hope.

Time has passed, and with the stability that my housing has provided, I’ve determined that I want to become a lawyer. I want to advocate for people who have been abused and have been victims of domestic violence too. But I have the strength to do this because I have access to safe, affordable, supportive housing.

The Urgent Home Campaign exists because the need for housing has never been more urgent. Your donation will immediately help women with stories just like mine. Please give.
