YWCA Toronto's pre-apprenticeship programs in the skilled trades offer women a chance to build a sustainable future. Each program includes academic upgrading, safety certification and full-time, hands-on training to receive Level 1 trade certification.


Horticultural Technician


YWCA Toronto has partnered with the Ontario Ministry of the Status of Women and Humber College to bring you a unique, women-only pre-apprenticeship training program to become a Horticultural Technician. This program is for women who have a keen interest in landscape trades and a strong desire for employment in this industry.

WHAT DOES THIS PROGRAM OFFER?

  • Qualified industry instructors

  • Women-only learning environment

  • Employment preparation training
  • Level 1 (Basic) in-school training program for the trade of Horticulture Technician in Ontario
  • Assistance with obtaining co-op placements
  • Essential skills training in Math and English

  • Women, 16 years and older
  • Minimum grade 10 math and grade 12 English (or equivalency by end of program)
  • Resident of and able to work in Ontario
  • Low income eligibility criteria
  • Willing and able to commit to a 31-week, intensive training program

Android Mobile Application Developer

Painter-Decorator


YWCA Toronto has partnered with the Ontario Industrial and Finishing Skills Centre, the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades to bring you a unique, women-only training experience to become a commercial painter-decorator.

WHAT DOES THIS PROGRAM INCLUDE?

  • Level 1 Certification for Painter-Decorator
  • Academic upgrading (math, English, and essential skills for the trade)
  • Eight weeks work experience after training is completed
  • Transportation funds (restrictions apply)
  • Job readiness training
  • Supportive, highly-skilled instructors
  • Ongoing support from YWCA Toronto staff 

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM FOR?

  • Women, 16 years old and up
  • Minimum grade 10 math and English or equivalency
  • Resident of and able to work in Ontario
  • Willing and able to commit to a 24 weeks full-time intensive training program
  • Possess or be eligible to obtain a valid driver’s license
  • Physically able to work in a variety of construction work environments
  • Possess appropriate hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity

Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic


YWCA Toronto has partnered with the Ontario Women’s Directorate and George Brown College to bring you a unique, 24-week women-only pre-apprenticeship training program to become a Residential Air Conditioning Systems Mechanic. Join a growing sector in the construction industry.

Women will receive academic upgrading, Level 1 certification and hands-on experience through a work placement. The skilled trades offer lucrative careers, good wages, opportunities for self-employment, flexible hours and a steady demand in the labour market.
