choices for living

If you would like an opportunity to meet with other women, gain a greater understanding of your mental health issues, learn relaxation techniques and be heard, this program is for you.

The Choices for Living program offers support, life skills discussions, and referral information for women coping with mental health challenges who want to make changes in their lives. Women in the groups describe themselves as dealing with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, and a wide variety of other mental health issues. Many of the participants have been given formal psychiatric diagnoses such as depression, bipolar disorder, dissociative identity disorder, or anxiety. The real commonality, however, is that women feel isolated, unable to cope, and in need of support from other women in similar situations.

We help you broaden your choices and develop better coping skills. This is done through a feminist approach, which focuses on strengths, competencies and empowerment. Life Skills lessons are an integral part of the program. We'll help you participate in society through improved self-care, developing healthier, more supportive relationships, and referrals for employment support, volunteer activities, or training courses.

We have two ongoing groups in North York, from September to June. The groups are free and TTC fare is provided.

Wednesday mornings: (younger women's group)
Black Creek Community Health Centre
North York Sheridan Mall
2202 Jane Street

Thursday mornings: (older women's group)
Driftwood Community Centre
4401 Jane Street

Mental Health Police Records Coalition

The Psychiatric Patient Advocacy office, Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and many others are collaborating in a Mental Health Police Records Check Coalition to lobby for change in Police Check Reporting policies and procedures.

YWCA Toronto is pleased to have become a member of the Mental Health Police Records Check Coalition. Participation in this action furthers YWCA Toronto’s advocacy work, helping women achieve equality, economic independence and lives free from violence.

For more information about the Coalition’s work and accomplishments, check out PPAO’s website: www.ppao.gov.on.ca. You can also read YWCA Toronto CEO, Heather McGregor’s, letter below.

The YWCA Toronto is committed to this action and we hope you will be able to join us.
