Breakthrough is a Turning Point Program for women that offers support, education and counselling groups to women who have survived violence or abuse, and for those still living in abusive situations.

In this safe learning environment, you’ll find an opportunity for creative expression and begin to feel that you are not alone. Breakthrough is a place where you can explore the impact of abuse/violence on your life, share your fears and pain, express emotion without judgement, and learn healthy coping strategies allowing you to move forward with your life.

We currently offer the following groups: two incest/childhood sexual abuse groups, one woman abuse/partner assault group, and one Expressive Healing Through Art group.

Each group is two hours in length. Women who participate in Breakthrough may attend a maximum of three 12-week sessions. Two groups are held in Scarborough and two groups run in the Lawrence West area. Each group has a maximum of 12 participants and intake is closed after the second week. All the groups are co-facilitated by two Breakthrough staff. TTC fare and snack are provided. On site childcare is provided at the Scarborough location, and limited childcare is available at our other location.

As you endure difficult situations, most often, your children are experiencing the same issues you are, including poverty and violence. The Breakthrough children’s group offers a valuable opportunity for them to find support alongside you. The Breakthrough children’s program offers safe and happy group experiences in a stimulating environment. Weekly programming also enhances children's self-esteem and independence. The childcare department is available as a resource for parents to provide information and referrals.

As well as facilitating the support groups, Breakthrough staff offers you ongoing support through individual and telephone crisis counselling, accompaniment (to court, Children’s Aid, and other community services and organizations) and advocating on your behalf by writing letters and attending case-conferences. Further, as part of its commitment to violence prevention, the Breakthrough team provides community consultations and presentations, and works on appropriate committees dealing with issues related to violence against women.
