ywca elm centre :
green, affordable, supportive
(coming in 2010)
In response to documented research and mounting evidence that the solution to poverty and homelessness is more affordable and supportive housing, and through a competitive process, YWCA Toronto - in partnership with Wigwamen Incorporated and The Jean Tweed Centre - was selected by the City of Toronto to create 300 new units of affordable and supportive housing, primarily for women and women-led families. Each of these units will be self-contained, and range in size from one to three bedrooms.
YWCA Elm Centre represents an extraordinary opportunity to provide women and women-led families in Toronto with the keys to independence and stability. Located in Toronto’s downtown core, YWCA Elm Centre will provide affordable and supportive housing for low-income women and their families, for women living with mental illness and substance misuse, and for families of Aboriginal ancestry. It will also be home to YWCA Toronto’s new administrative headquarters and a hub for women-focused events and activities in our city.
The development will feature:
- 150 affordable units for single women and women-led families
- 100 supportive & affordable units for women living with mental health issues and substance misuse, and their children
- 50 units of affordable housing for families of Aboriginal ancestry, including 10 units for Aboriginal women fleeing violence
- 15% of the 300 units (45 units) will be for women aged 50+
- 200 seat auditorium
- 60 seat restaurant with outdoor terrace
