home / shelter, housing & support / Bergamot Bergamot
As experts in alternative housing for women-led households, YWCA Toronto is excited to be involved once again in the development of permanent affordable housing for women who have been victims of violence. Drawing on the experience and success of our Pape Avenue apartments, we are working towards building 68 apartments on Bergamot Avenue just north of the 401, west of Islington Avenue. Suites ranging in size from 1 bedroom to 4 bedrooms will be occupied by women-led households. Some of the units will be barrier-free. Rent supplements will be available for all households so the affordability and security of tenure of our residents will be protected. In addition to funding from the City of Toronto for the rent supplements, the development will be funded by the YWCA, the City of Toronto, the Province of Ontario and the federal government. On-going operation of the complex will be funded by the YWCA. The complex will also house a licensed day care centre for children. Other amenities will include a playground, gardens, meeting rooms and counselling services. With the support of the community working group, we are making our way through the City approval process. If all goes well, we expect construction to begin in early 2005.
