May 22, 2012, the YWCA Toronto Julia M. Ruby Leadership Centre (formerly YWCA Elm Centre) officially opened with a ceremony attended by the federal, provincial and city governments and hundreds of supporters, donors, neighbours and friends. The Centre is the largest affordable housing project to be built in the city in at least a decade. The centre hosts YWCA Toronto’s administrative headquarters and an apartment building that features a concierge, courtyard and a rooftop garden. Set in downtown Toronto, the centre offers affordable homes to low-income women and their families, women living with mental health and addiction issues and families of Aboriginal ancestry.
