Common Ground Conference

Friday, October 21, 2011, 9:30 - 3:30pm
The 519 Community Centre
519 Church St. at Wellesley Ave.
Registration is required. See download bar for registration form.

Hosted by YWCA Toronto and the White Ribbon Campaign and sponsored by OSSTF District12, Common Ground, is a free conference.  It is a response to a broadly acknowledged need to build common ground between young men and women and to find solutions to gender-based violence.

This conference will build students’ capacity to have difficult conversations.  It will give them an opportunity to be leaders in their community and at school as they coordinate an event or campaign to end gender- based violence.

There are three days associated with this conference.

Day 1: In class
We start with a short presentation at your school.  A conference rep will lead students through a discussion of the definitions related to gender, sexual harassment, power and privilege.

Day 2: At the conference
Delegates will hear from panelists, attend interactive workshops and explore gender, power and race in an effort to end gender-based violence and sexual harassment in schools.

Panelists:
Jenifer Arango, Toronto Women’s City Alliance
Heather Jervis and Sonya JF Barnett, SlutWalk founders

Day 3: At school, in the community
Each class is required to host an event, campaign or action at their school or in their community on a Day of Significance to end gender-based violence.  Representatives from YWCA, White Ribbon Campaign or the Gender-Based Violence Prevention Program are available to support or attend these events.
