YWCA LINC is a Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada program that offers free English classes to immigrant women. Eligible participants must be 18 years or older, be landed immigrants with permanent residency cards, and must not speak English as their first language. Every class is built around a specific theme. A selection of themes include: employment, family, parenting skills, and healthcare for women in Canada, Canadian law and education and government community resources. In this program, students not only gain comfort with the English language, they also gain a valuable introduction to the Canadian way of life. All the language practice exercises used are based on real life situations that may arise. Students learn English in a manner that teaches them an array of valuable life skills that allows them to integrate within their community and become contributing members of the Canadian society.
